I’m a CSS contributing or deferred member

Your eligible spouse will receive a percentage of the invalidity pension which would have been paid to you if you had retired on invalidity grounds. Please see the table below for their relevant pension payment percentage.

Any benefit reduction due to a Benefit Classification Certificate will be applied. Your spouse may choose any benefit choice that would have been available to you on invalidity retirement.

I’m a CSS pensioner

If you die while receiving your CSS pension, your eligible spouse can receive a pension calculated as a percentage of your pension at the time of your death. The pension percentage paid to your spouse depends on if you choose the higher dependant pension option at the time of your retirement.

Please see the table below for their relevant pension payment percentage.

Higher dependant option

If you retire on age or involuntary retirement grounds, or claim your preserved benefit on age grounds, you can elect to receive a lower pension at the time, in return for your eligible spouse and/or children to receive a higher pension after your death. You can elect to reduce your pension to 93% of the normal pension rate and, in return, your eligible spouse and/or children will receive a higher pension.

This option is not available if you retire on invalidity grounds or die as a contributing or deferred member.
